Aliens Colonial Marines’ Terrible AI Due To Five-Year-Old Typo

The Xenomorph’s garbage AI was due to a single misplaced “a”.

So I think we can all agree, Aliens Colonial Marines, was a hot pile of garbage when it first came out in 2013. It has become notorious, due to a lawsuit between it’s developer Gearbox Software and their publisher Sega, over the game’s dubious quality.

Most criticised of all aspects of the game, was the Xenomorph’s AI, of which simply ran toward the player in a straight line, often exposing themselves to be easily killed.

I mention this, because a post from late last year, has taken the attention of the larger gaming community of late: A modder by the name of “Templargfx”, who has been working on an “overhaul” mod for ACM, revealed that the game’s Xenomorph AI can be drastically improved, by spell checking a .INI file. The file in question is responsible for telling the AI about the environment it is in, and the various ways it can flank and approach the player.

The original line of code goes as follows:

ClassRemapping=PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachXenoToTether -> PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachPawnToTeather

You’ll notice, the coder has misspelt tether as “Teather”. This simple spelling mistake, is what stopped the game from telling the AI the different paths that it can take to surprise the player. As the typo had not been fixed by Gearbox in any update in the last five years, many players have taken it upon themselves to fix it themselves. As such, players have widely reported that the fix has made the game much more enjoyable, with the Xenomorphs becoming a more challenging type of encounter in the game.

Of course it doesn’t fix the game’s graphics, the terrible excuse for a script that has been made canon, or the game’s over dependency on cover-shooting levels against droves of Wayland-Yutani Soldiers. Nor does is it possible for the fix to be applied on console versions of the game by fans.

The original 2013 game was released for Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, with metacritic scores of 43 (Playstation),48 (Xbox) and 45 (PC).

What do you think of the typo? Did you ever play the game when it came out? Will you fix the typo on your copy? Join the discussion below.
